Temperatures in cities are often far higher than those experienced in nearby rural areas. We refer to these locations as “urban heat islands.” For example, New York City can reach up to 5 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than surrounding areas!

Urban heat islands created by the conversion of natural landscapes to cities are a clear example of the direct impact humans can have on their local climates. But why do these differences in temperatures occur?
